AUTOMOTIVE

Developing an Open-Source Autonomous Driving Platform Through the Integration of a ROS2 Interface into a Woodpecker Electric Vehicle (EV)

Course work

Hardware and Software Integration (ELEE 4000)
in collaboration with the VICEROY scholars research program sponsored by the Department of Defense

Overview

Developed an electric vehicle control architecture to for the control of the Woodpeck Electric Vehicle platofmr through a combination of RS232 USB serial communication, ROS2 publisher/subscriber nodes and CAN.

Developed with

1. C++
2. ROS2
3. CAN
4. Woodpecker Electric Vehicle Platform
5. Xbox controller
6. Two Raspberry Pis with Ubuntu (Linux OS)
7. RS485-CAN-HAT

Performed

1. Created an event-driven input driver for an Xbox controller to control the EV platform with C++
2. Used C++ & ROS2 on Ubuntu (Linux) OS to write a publisher node that sends controller data to a subscriber wirelessly
3. The subscriber Raspberry Pi programmed for CAN transmission was connected to the EV CAN bus for control

Performed

4. The Xbox controller can be used to steer, brake and control the acceleration of the electric vehicle platform
5. Presented the project to Senator Gary Peters & National Cyber Director, Harry Coker
6. Next steps involve building upon the control architecture to enable the autonomous operation of the EV

Achieved

Won first place for Engineering Research Excellence at the College of Engineering & Science Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium
